| Practical Culture | ||
| Practical Culture is a collaborative project created by the Avant Gardening class at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Spring semester 2008. It consists of six raised beds of recycled plastic lumber growing 12 varieties of lettuce organically in the SAIC sculpture courtyard, an underutilized space similar to vacant lots in urban environments. Our goal was to address issues of sustainability, urban agriculture, local food systems, community organization and sculpture. | ||
| As a class, we designed the scope of the project, researched materials, secured funding from the school, constructed the beds, and planted the lettuce. | ||
